[Silence then, filled with breathing for who knows how long a pause.]

[ Odd, but when Alayne goes to look for a "Hansen" amongst the users on the device, she finds not one but two listings for someone with the name. Or perhaps not so odd for a place that collected people across time and space and worlds. It would seem more odd if he was the only Hansen that ever was in existence. (Or that's what she tells herself.) A little fiddling, a little poking and in the end she decides that "Chuck" is the one that she's looking for.
It's early in the afternoon when she messages him. ]
Ranger Hansen,
Have you settled yourself?

[ Raleigh tells her eventually where the bruise purpling the rise of his cheek is from and when Mako hears the news something inside her shutters closed like slats on a set of blinds or locks on a dam. It's the only way to keep what's inside in (—shut it down, lock it up, swallow it, if you have to—) and while it isn't pleasant it serves Mako as well as it always has.
Chuck alive. Here. With them.
She isn't so selfish as to dwell on what this means for her, personally, though she does allow herself to consider what it could mean for them as a whole. Two is better than one, three is better than two. (Mako gives a spare thought as to what Marshal Hansen will do, has done. When he sees Chuck again, does he embrace him as a son? Or does he salute him for a job well done?)
Mako leaves it alone for a day. Then two.
Then on the third day she contacts him. ]
We should talk.
[ As if they were even capable of talking. As if their last actual conversation hadn't been years and years past. ]

[ There are those who look for her and those she looks for. Alayne does not message Chuck Hansen out of compassion or need, but her thoughts go to him nevertheless the first time Carver takes down a necromorph, the dim light catching on his the plating of his armor.
She does not expect a conversation. Alayne simply wants him to know (like last words issued before a great fall): ]
I do not think to wish you safe, for I know that is not your nature.
Know instead that my thoughts are with you.
May your rangers fight bravely and well.

[ their time is dwindling, and Herc is fully aware they're closing in on it. their team is starting to suffer, breathing coming bated and fatigue starting to wear on the weakest of them.
Herc pushes on because it's the only thing he knows how to do. because he has rangers, and a son, to get back to. he has Max to take care of, because as kind as everyone's been to look out for the pup, Herc isn't the kind to shuffle off responsibility.
he's catching a breath when, selfishly, he opens an audio channel with his son. ]
Found the source. Heh— You thought Leatherback was ugly.

[ As far as she knows, no one has gone anywhere yet, but she has to be sure. (It was just the one time, but Mako knows what she saw.) ]

[ he is never going to get his regular sleep cycle back. yancy's pretty resigned to this revelation. so he wanders down to the classroom because if he can't sleep, he might as well be useful.
what he doesn't expect, is... well, this. ] I don't even want to know.

[ So the cavern collapsed and it was all really scary, especially for the likes of Alayne who's had more scramble than spring in her step when it comes to perilous situations. She'd almost lost Lady in the collapse, but the Doctor had salvaged her when she'd run off, leaving Alayne no choice but to scrabble, tear-stained, to surface with little Nigredo in tow.
Now that things are settled, her thoughts turn to those should ask after. The Master Chief is gone and she feels that loss poignantly but she tries not to flounder. ]
Ranger Hansen, are you still with us?
