[ Alayne feels as though she's trapped in a very small space, one with too little air and devoid of light. And she feels as though its only door is slowly but surely shutting, sealing her in and shutting all hope out.
In the back of her mind she tells herself a story. Isaac, sleep addled, had stumbled from the room in search of water or coffee; the Master Chief ha some sudden emergency, but nothing that would bring either of them harm. He'd left with his thoughts distracted and, with his mind elsewhere, he'd forgotten his usual note.
In the end, he comes back within an hour and Alayne feels silly for have worrying in the first place.
It's a good story. ]
Lady's upset.
[ I'm upset, though she'd never say it so plainly. ]
[ because chuck knows what this would be if their positions were reversed. knows that if it were his old man missing, he'd be out walking the city until he found him or died trying. he and alayne aren't the same, aren't even close. but he'll go looking all the same. ]
[ She should stay; she should go; she should tie a ribbon round the door handle — the one that is blue and gold, the one that Isaac likes best of all — so that he knows that she's simply walking abroad. She should leave him a note on one of the chalkboard; she should write him a poem; she should entreat to the network come home. ]
What if he comes back and I'm not here? I wouldn't want him to worry.
