[ Alayne feels as though she's trapped in a very small space, one with too little air and devoid of light. And she feels as though its only door is slowly but surely shutting, sealing her in and shutting all hope out.
In the back of her mind she tells herself a story. Isaac, sleep addled, had stumbled from the room in search of water or coffee; the Master Chief ha some sudden emergency, but nothing that would bring either of them harm. He'd left with his thoughts distracted and, with his mind elsewhere, he'd forgotten his usual note.
In the end, he comes back within an hour and Alayne feels silly for have worrying in the first place.
